Common Questions About Home Insulation

Here are the most common questions we hear from our residential customers.

How much will a properly insulated home reduce my power bill?

The amount you can save on your power bill by properly insulating your home depends on several factors, including your home’s size, climate, current insulation levels, types of insulation and energy costs. However, here are some general estimates:

Savings Range: Proper insulation can reduce heating and cooling costs by 10% to 50%. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates an average savings of 15% on heating and cooling (or about 11% on total energy costs).

Impact by Insulation Type:

  • Attic insulation: Can save 10-30% on heating and cooling costs.
  • Wall insulation: Typically reduces costs by 15-25% if your walls are poorly insulated.
  • Sub-Floor & Basement insulation: Can save 5-15%, especially if you have an uninsulated crawlspace.
  • Sealing air leaks (around windows, doors, ducts): Can provide additional savings of 5-20%.

If your home is older or has little insulation, the savings will be greater.

It depends on whether we’re insulating an existing home or new construction.

For existing homes:

  • Insulation: We use fiberglass or cellulose.
  • Method: Drill small 2-inch holes in between each stud then fill with insulation. The hole is plugged and you’ll be responsible for patching and painting the wall.

Exterior Walls & New Construction:
If you’re re-siding your home, consider adding rigid foam board or closed-cell spray foam under the siding. They both provide a continuous layer, preventing heat loss through studs. For new construction or full remodels Fiberglass, RockWool, Spray foam or rigid foam are options we offer.

Mold is a part of life in Western WA’s wet climate. Attics are extra vulnerable to mold and mildew. Yes, our home insulation experts are trained and tested on how to identify and treat mold. We use eco-friendly enzymes and other non-toxic methods to remove mold and prevent it from coming back.

It depends on whether your home’s insulation meets your energy providers requirements for rebates. Most homes in the Pacific Northwest built before 1990, or with less than 5 inches of insulation will qualify.
